It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! With the first snowflakes falling and Christmas lights and trees everywhere, we can’t help but feel the holiday vibes. Trouble finding a present for your loved ones? Or spare time and no idea what to do with it? No worries! We made an overview of things to do. How about a nice dinner at one of our favorites? These activities will surely bring you in a festive mood!

Keuken van Gastmaal

Price for a 3-course menu: €35

During my study, I have worked at the Keuken van Gastmaal. I learned more about wine then I expected and had a blast working at this relatively small restaurant – only 48 couverts. The food isn’t cheap but original and very well executed by chef Erik. Combine that with top-notch wine and you’ll go home singing!

Héron Petit Restaurant

Price for a 3-course menu: €33,50

At the Keuken van Gastmaal I had the pleasure of working with Victor. After I stopped working there Victor opened his own restaurant with his girlfriend Joyce. At Héron the chefs work with locally produced products and they use every bit of an animal (called ‘het vijfde kwartier’). And just like the Keuken van Gastmaal, delicious wines with every meal!

Café Tilt

Price for a 3-course menu: €25,00

Having dinner at Tilt is not too expensive and there are enough options. From a vegetarian lasagne to a big burger with fries. But, more important, this cafe owns a big variety of board games! Which is definitely one of my favorite things to do when the days are getting colder. From card games to chess and from ‘Settlers of Catan’ to Scrabble: good fun guaranteed at this cozy place located at the Lange Jufferstraat.

‘t Spoorwegmuseum

Price for a ticket: €16,50. After 15:00, it’s only €7,50

I don’t think I can think of a better holiday activity than going to a museum! And visiting the Spoorwegmuseum tops all your expectations. It’s the complete Christmas experience and more. There’s gluhwein, live music, a skating rink, marshmallows for toasting. If -like me- you’re a sucker for Christmas, the Winter Station is where you want to be. This place might be a bit over the top for a first date (that’s up to you!), but it’s a perfect family activity.

Grand Hotel Karel V

Check their website for accurate prices

Holiday bonus? Or just feeling fancy? Than Grand Hotel Karel V is the place you want to be during the holidays. To me, this is definitely the most prestigious place of Utrecht, and therefore perfect for Christmas. Grand Hotel Karel V has various packages like the Culinary Christmas Arrangement or Elegant Christmas Arrangements. All of them include a stay at the hotel as well, so no need to worry about being careful with your alcohol consumption 😉

Filmtheater ‘t Hoogt

The price for a regular movie ticket is €9,50

Even though I knew it for a while I am still very sad to see Filmtheater ‘t Hoogt leaving their beautiful building in the city center. Until the 30th of December, you will have the time to say your final goodbyes to 46 years of cinematography at Hoogt 4. A farewell party will take place on Saturday evening December 29th, everyone who loves’ t Hoogt is welcome to join!

You’ll find their schedule here

De Rechtbank

Price for a 3-course menu: €35

I had dinner at De Rechtbank on my birthday and I really enjoyed it! The food is delicious and the staff gives you great advice about the wines. There was a good ambiance so I highly recommend paying a visit. For the people who have kids: there is a basement where the kids can play and have a good time. At De Rechtbank you can have dinner but also go for lunch or a coffee with a pastry!

Ice skating at Vechtsebanen

Entrance price: €9,00, this is the price for hiring ice skates: €6,00

For me, ice skating is the perfect activity during the holidays! A week ago the first snowflakes fell down from the sky, but now it isn’t freezing anymore. So, no ice skating on ‘real’ ice this holiday. But no need to be sad, there is a beautiful ice skating rink in Utrecht, Overvecht! So call your friends, family, boy or girlfriend and go ice skating! Hot chocolate or mulled wine can’t be missed!

More and more coffee bars have popped up and there are a lot of places to grab a sandwich on the go or stay for work. Best of all, Utrecht has a wide variety in of restaurants. Laura’s favorite? Anything with sushi, pasta, Indian, vegetarian, burgers, fish, meat, classic French… she’s not picky at all!
