Oh, how I love Spain. The weather, the food, the language.. ever since living in Barcelona for some time I have this appetite for everything Spanish. Our invitation to have dinner at the Zwarte Vosch couldn’t come soon enough and brought us back to warmer days.

Color-coded food at de Zwarte Vosch

We took a seat right across from the large bar and close to the kitchen (and food!). Since it was Maaike her birthday, we started with a Spanish bubble: cava. One of the lovely waiters explained what we could expect that evening: tapas and pinxtos (with colored sticks) either from the menu or the glass showcase on the left side of the bar. Staff would walk around with some of the specials, also with these painted stalks. The sticks (blue, green, red or yellow) would give you an indication of the price: from € 3,50 to € 6,50. When paying for dinner, these sticks are then counted which would add up to the amount you are due.

Located in the center of Utrecht: alongside the Oudegracht

The restaurant is conveniently located on the Oudegracht. Across cafe Kalf for example and a little further (and on the other side) than Pathe Rembrandt. De Zwarte Vosch’s interior is best described as warm: the large glass doors give you a taste of what to expect before entering and an assortment of tables: with high chairs and couches. It is even possible to grab a drink + bite to eat while sitting at the bar. A smart see-through part of the floor shows the wharf cellar where more tables are lined up. Great for a Spanish evening with your loved one(s) or like we did: with friends!

Pros

  • Located in the city center!
  • Relatively cheap tapas
  • With an option to grab a bite to eat in the wharf cellar

Cons

  • I couldn’t think of one..
