When I got my first room in Utrecht, I lived in Kanaleneiland. When biking to Utrecht Central Station I would bike past what is now Fico, with the intention to eat there someday. And I did! Britt and I went to Fico to see what the menu has to offer. And I can tell you, it is a lot! Fish, vegetarian or (wild) meat, are among the many things Britt and I ate, of course, served with complimentary wine.

Fico: every detail counts

Every detail is thought out at Fico. The beautiful color on the walls (a sort of indigo blue), carpets hanging from the ceiling and comfy chairs. While walking in, personnel took our coat and we walked past nooks filled with sweets like caramels, peanut brittles, and macarons. Hard not to stop and start with dessert;). But more cute details everywhere: a Spanish looking floor, personnel in black wearing the same sneakers and plates made from all kinds of materials. Interesting fact: the owners of Fico also have WT Urban Kitchen, located in an old water tower.

So much good food

We were treated to a 7-course meal. Think codfish with mussels, citrus, parsley, and leak. Or sea bass with radish, verbena, and apple. Britt, who eats vegetarian, wasn’t jealous at all: her dishes included a course with cauliflower, hazelnut, parmesan, Vacherin Mont d’Or and truffle. Before we started our main course we cleansed our pallet with something that was both sweet and fresh: a course with cucumber (made the zure matten way: dipped in sugar) and yogurt. So good! With every course, we tasted the wine that complements that dish, all ‘garnished’ with an explanation by Norbert, one of the owners and our host for the evening.

Pros

  • Original and good: you’ll leave Fico super happy and full (if you eat 7-courses as we did)
  • One word: wine. Every wine is just as good as the other and explained in detail by Norbert or one of the other hosts
  • The view is great, probably even better in summer, when the large windows will give you a view over the Veilinghaven

Cons

  • Bring your parents: the prices are very reasonable for the food quality and wines but won’t suit someone on a budget
