Low key but with a fancy touch, that is what we would say when we have to describe Saar. This restaurant opened its doors along the Catharijnesingel, where once Americana was located. The low key part is mainly because of the relaxed vibe the restaurant emits. There is a long bar, a cheese fridge and the dishes are written on the walls. And that is exactly the atmosphere Saar is trying to create, or as they say it on their website: we like to keep things simple and if possible; the food and wine sustainable.

Cheese and wine at Saar

Upon walking in the bistro our eyes were immediately drawn to the cheese fridge. The fridge is stationed right in front of a wide selection of wine, a good combination if you’ll ask us. With that in mind, we take a seat, right next to the big window overlooking the Singel. Let our lunch begin.

Small dishes to share at Saar

Ramon and Sandra first worked together at the Zwarte Vosch, one of our favorites in Utrecht, and when plans for Saar arose there were no doubts about opening up a resto together. If we have to describe the food we would say there is a Spanish or Mediterranean influence on the menu (but this isn’t set in stone). Think falafel with yellow curry (normally served as a snack), artichokes with truffle and parsley or the squid with an ink veloute both on the menu as medium-sized (sharing) dish. At Saar, you can walk in whenever you feel like it, whether you’re in the mood for a glass of wine or dinner to share. The restaurant is open during the day until the owners feel it is time to go home.

Always room for dessert

Since we’ve been eying the cheese since we entered the restaurant we finished our meal with a cheese platter for two with wine for Laura and a non-alcoholic drink for Maaike. Delicious!

Pros

  • All the dishes are really rich in flavor and well thought out
  • The wines are topnotch, think vin nature wines and other good stuff
  • Open for lunch, a snack or dinner!
  • The restaurant plans to open a large outside terrace in Summer

Cons

  • The view out of the window isn’t the best, we sat next to a bike lane and looked over a bike rack. The inside of the restaurant does make up for it though!
